What is Sexual Health?

Sexual health is a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being💯 in relation to sexuality. It requires a positive approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.

Reproductive health  is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being💯 and not merely the absence of reproductive disease🦠 and infirmity in all matters relating to the reproductive systems, functions and processes.

Sexual and reproductive health of an individual is the physical and emotional wellbeing of such individual and this includes the ability to remain free of unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortion, sexually transmitted infections and other forms of sexual violence and coercion.

Life is a continuum that starts at birth and progresses through childhood, adolescence, adulthood and through to old age and eventually death. Different stages of life throw up different challenges related to our sexuality. Physical enjoyment and excitement are natural human feelings, and this can involve physical closeness to other people. Young people and older adults may want to explore caressing, kissing, touching and sexual contact with their partners.

While sexual behaviours are natural and can be healthy, there are risky sexual practices that can have negative and long term consequences on an individual e.g. early sexual initiation, sex with multiple partners, transactional sex, unprotected sex, sex under the influence of psychoactive substances etc.

It is important to be informed about each stage of life and to maintain a positive view of our sexuality at different stages so we know how to express our feelings and desires, and to derive pleasure from living – as individuals and in relationships with others.

In the previous module, we talked about decision making as a skill that is very important for every individual to develop. You can refer to the topic to apply the steps to make the right decision for yourself to your sexual behaviour

Factors that influences our understanding and experience of sexuality

There are certain factors such as culture, experiences, personalities and physiological states that can influence our understanding and experience of sexuality, therefore it is our responsibility to always express our sexuality responsibly by ensuring our safety as well as the safety of others we are in relationship with.

Physical enjoyment and excitement are natural human feelings, and this can involve physical closeness to other people. For example, babies want to touch and be touched, and a baby boy would sometimes get an erection.
