Tolerance 😬

Tolerance is a powerful tool for building strong relationships, communities and societies. It helps to promote understanding, empathy, diversity and inclusion. Tolerance is accepting that other people are different and rejecting stereotypes about people because of those differences which can be attributed to gender, race,  religion, health or socio-economic status, ideologies, perspectives etc.

As an individual, you need to be willing to accept and embrace people with different beliefs, opinions, practices and values from yours by exercising fairness, respect, objectivity and a non-judgemental attitude. Tolerance is important in promoting peace, unity, mutual respect and inclusiveness in a society.

Demonstrating tolerance

The following steps can guide your dealings with people:

  1. Do not respond to people with anger. This can be quite difficult but take a deep breath and calm down. Exercise control over your emotions and avoid unnecessary fights.
  2. Be an active listener. Listening is a very important skill and a lot can be achieved when you actively listen to the other person’s perspective and understand their point of view.
  3. Be assertive with your boundaries and help others to understand it.
  4. Show empathy.
  5. It’s okay to quit relationships if it’s going to create a harmful or negative environment.

Inclusion ♿

Inclusion can be described as an act of giving equal access and opportunities to people without discrimination and irrespective of age, gender, race, disabilities or any other reason. Inclusion helps to ensure that everyone feels valued in a group so that they can add value to the group.

Inclusion is very important because it helps the different individuals in a group to think differently, share their experiences and perspective. This can help a group become more innovative and stronger. Other benefits of inclusion includes:

  1. Increase in self-esteem and confidence
  2. Promotes empathy and understanding
  3. Enhances social skills and relationships
  4. Support general health and well-being

How can you practise inclusion?

  1. Active listening to others
  2. Advocating for inclusion
  3. Challenging stereotypes and biases

Unconscious biases, language barriers, social norms and expectations, physical limitations etc can be a challenge to inclusion, however when you educate yourself, engage in open dialogue, practise empathy and seek diverse perspectives, you will overcome such challenges.

Respect 🫡

This is an important social value that forms the basis for healthy relationships, effective communication and peaceful co-existence in the society. It is a powerful force that can bring people together irrespective of age or background. Respect can also be described as a feeling of deep admiration for someone because of their qualities, abilities or achievements.

Respect means:

  1. Valuing others’ opinions and feelings
  2. Listening actively and showing empathy
  3. Honouring boundaries and privacy
  4. Avoiding judgement and destructive criticism
  5. Showing consideration and kindness

Respect  is in 2 forms – self-respect and respect for others.

    • Respect for others has to do with recognising and appreciating the worth of others i.e. you must understand and accept that everyone has personal boundaries and limits and it’s important not to invade their privacy without permission, you must actively listen to others to show that you value their opinions and feelings and you must show empathy to others.
    • Self-respect involves recognising and appreciating your own worth i.e. setting and maintaining personal boundaries and practising self-care.

Why is Respect important?

Respect is very important in relationships because

    1. It builds feelings of trust and safety.
    2. It helps you to feel safe and express yourself without being judged
    3. It encourages open communication
    4. It supports personal growth and development

How do you deal with relationships where you are being disrespected?

  1. You need to recognise your self worth and appreciate it i.e. practise self-respect.
  2. Identify the major causes why you are being disrespected. You may need to work on your areas of weaknesses if you identify any.
  3. Speak to an adult in the case of bullying, abuse, assault or harassment.
  4. Know that it is very much okay to end relationships if the other person can’t be respectful.

In conclusion, if you want to be respected, it is important that you also give respect to others regardless of background, beliefs or differences in opinions and also learn to respect yourself – not just in words but also in actions.
