What is drug abuse?

This can be defined as the uncontrollable pattern of use of harmful psychoactive substances such as alcohol, marijuana, stimulants (cocaine, cracks), opioids (painkillers) and even prescription drugs. 💊

Drug use can become drug abuse when the individual ignores the consequences of drug use due to the uncontrollable desire to continue to use. Drug abuse has significant consequences and can negatively affect an individual’s lifestyle and relationships especially in adolescents who are still developing and can become easily vulnerable to the harmful effects of drug abuse.

People abuse drugs for different reasons, some of which include peer pressure, curiosity, not following doctor’s prescription, expression of independence for young people, a means to forget troubles, for pleasure etc.

There’s another term called drug addiction – this is a state of psychological and physical dependence on a drug. It also results in negative consequences in the life of the individual.

Help! I'm already abusing drugs, what can I do?

  1. Have a strong determination to stop using drugs 🚫. Remember we mentioned earlier that drug abuse is an uncontrollable use of drugs, you have to make your resolution to be free of drug abuse stronger. This can help you resist the urge to abuse drugs.
  2. Engage in productive activities 👨‍💻. Doing this will take your mind off abusing drugs. Stay away from activities or people that may trigger your desire for those substances.
  3. Seek professional help 👩‍⚕️. This has to do with seeking the help of a therapist, counsellor or other registered health care provider for tools that can help you recover from drug abuse. The tools can be therapies, medications and detoxification (removal of those drugs from the body system). Rehabilitation programs are also quite helpful in recovering from drug abuse.
