Building Mental Resilience.

Have you been wounded, heartbroken 💔 by someone you trusted or even disappointed by your own expectations? Are you ashamed of that scar that seems like it cannot be healed? Is it possible you are confused as to what to do next with your life? Do you feel left behind as all your friends are making progress and you are not? Are you even thinking of taking your own life because you think there’s nothing worth living for?

You must have heard of the saying ‘life is not a bed of roses’ and that is because life can be tough at times – death of a loved one, terminal illnesses, natural or man-made disasters, economic hardships, failures, disappointments, tragedy, threats, bullying, insurgencies or even high stress. Even though the media makes life look pretty easy, the truth is that there are hard times too and if it is not effectively prepared for and managed, it can lead to some serious consequences that can affect not just the physical wellbeing but also mental, social and emotional wellbeing.

According to the World Health Organisation, an individual must have the ability to cope with normal stress of day-to-day living such as failures, challenges, stress etc before being considered mentally healthy. This implies that coping not just with the day-to-day stress of life but also having the ability to effectively deal with challenges of life is an essential skill for survival. However, because we are not born with this skill, it is a skill we need to learn.

What is Mental Resilience? 🧠

This is the ability to adapt well in the face of challenging times. Developing this skill is a personal journey as each person is faced with his/her own challenges. Being prepared for challenges makes it easier to deal with them and knowing how to manage our wellbeing is important for recovery after a challenging time.

How to Build Resilience

Seek help 🤲. At one time or another, every individual needs assistance in coping with changes in life circumstances or the environment. You may not need help today, but knowing what help is out there, makes you feel more able to act when you need to protect your own or someone else’s health, well-being, and remain safe.

Why do you need to seek help? Talking to someone about what is upsetting you and about your feelings can be a relief. It also usually helps to know that others have gone through similar situations and this can help you figure out how to respond.

Where can you seek help from? Help can be received from family, friends, religious leaders, community members or even professionals such as health services providers, legal services providers, social welfare organisations, support groups through various means such as pamphlets, books, videos, websites, telephone hotlines

What can you seek help for? Help can be sought for any issue that affects your health and wellbeing which include your relationships, goals and life choices, rights, body, health, identity, basic security, emotional wellbeing, sexuality, gender issues etc. There is no shame in seeking help for a situation that seems too difficult or overwhelming to handle alone. In fact, it is a smart thing to do.

Take care of yourself 💪. Develop the habit of taking care of yourself as it concerns your physical, emotional and mental health. Eat healthy and balanced diets, get good sleep, maintain a healthy lifestyle and exercise well. This is important to keep you up on your feet when the going gets tough.

Be easy on yourself 😌. As humans, we all have days when we are very happy, happy, neutral, sad and very sad and this is commonly referred to as mood fluctuations. This can be as a result of emotional responses to challenges in everyday life. Cut yourself some slack by taking a break to re-strategize, set smart goals for yourself so as not to be overwhelmed, spend time with the people that matter to you, enjoy the help and support you receive and take each day at a time.

Develop your interests and hobbies 🚴🏼‍♀️. Doing the things you love and enjoy can help distract you from a stressful or challenging situation. Sharing your hobbies with others can also help you meet new people.

Identify your triggers 🔎. Identifying and working on your triggers can help you avoid or prepare for these situations. Knowing what you can change and what you cannot change will help you deal better with the stress.

Have you played on a bouncing bed before?

What happens when you throw yourself carefree on the bed? It immediately bounces you back. That’s what your resilience skills do for you. They are not only useful for the challenging times, they are essential skills for everyday life.
