David lives with his family in Bembo Community. Bembo is a new settlement with few houses and the majority of its occupants are elderly people. In the month of July, there was a heavy rainfall ⛈ that resulted in flooding and one of its aftermath was the creation of a ditch in a major path walked by the members of the community. The ditch wasn’t much of a concern until it got wider and posed a danger to the community members.
One of those days in school, David’s Civics Studies teacher 👨🏫 taught about volunteering. The teacher explained that volunteering involves giving your time, effort and talent back to a need, mission or cause without financial gain. He also mentioned that apart from the fact that you are helping others by volunteering, there are other benefits such as having the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others, a sense of purpose, meeting new people, improving your social skills, helping you to be happier, learning valuable skills, providing job prospects etc. The teacher concluded by encouraging the students to look into their community for a need or cause and make a difference.
David remembered the ditch in his community and spoke to his classmates about it. They all agreed to lend a helping hand in filling the ditch and fixed the next Saturday for the community service. As early as 7am on the agreed day, the students gathered with the necessary equipment like shovels and head pans to carry out the work. The community head saw them and was amazed by their actions. He commended them and made refreshments available for them.
This act of service done voluntarily by David and his classmates will never be forgotten by the people of Bembo community. Also, the students enjoyed the satisfaction that comes with helping people and they all decided that during their vacation periods, they will be identifying and meeting the needs of people around them so that the world will be a better place to live. During this community service, 3 other young people in the community joined them. David later became close friends with two of them — Musa and Winifred. They took pictures which he posted on his Whatsapp status. His Aunty saw them and commented. David was happy with himself for being part of something bigger than him. Always remember that with volunteering, financial reward is not the goal. While some may reward you financially, most do not.
You can find volunteering opportunities here and here and you can also check the website and social media feeds of other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other pro-youth organisations around you. There is always a formal organisation in every state that you can volunteer.
