How Can I Choose My Friends? 💁‍♀️

As an adolescent, having good friends by your side is very important in navigating the wins and challenges of this stage. You have the power to choose friends who will help shape your future and help you achieve your dreams 💪. Choosing the right friends takes time and effort, the question now is, how can you choose the right friends?

The following things should be considered when choosing your friends or accepting friend requests:

  1. Vision: you have to think about your aspirations and what you want to achieve in life. Surrounding yourself with people with similar vision will motivate and inspire you to reach new heights 💎.
  2. Values: These are the principles you believe in and determine what is important to you. When you and your friends share similar values, it creates a stronger foundation for your friendship.
  3. Interests: Having shared interests and activities you invest your time and resources in with your friends creates strong bonds. Having common ground can make friendships more enjoyable 🛐.
  4. Personality: personality traits can make or break friendships. It is important you connect with people who compliment your personality and balance each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

Surround yourself with people who make you better and you will build friendships that truly matter. True friendship takes time to develop, therefore be patient and stay true to yourself.

Red flags in choosing friends 🙅

Avoid choosing these categories of people as your friends:

  • People who constantly bring you down or discourage you.
  • People who pressure you into doing things you are uncomfortable with or things against your values
  • People who are constantly gossiping and full of negative energy

You can talk to your school counsellor, a trusted teacher or your parent/guardian to guide you when choosing your friends. In conclusion, when choosing the kind of friends you want, also ask yourself “am I that kind of friend?” The best way to make a friend is to be a friend. 👍🏾
